A content management system (CMS) is software that makes it easy for people to organize and manage web content. Which is important because it makes maintaining and updating a website simple and affordable.
All the dynamic websites published by WabbieWorks are powered by an open source CMS; WordPress, a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. These are the main reasons why we have chosen WordPress as our main publishing platform. WordPress has also been chosen as the publishing platform from many well known websites such as Time Live Blogs, Reuters US Blogs, Larry King Live, The Ford Story, MTV Newsroom, ZDNet Technology, TV Tonight, Andy Roddick and Wall Street Journal.
These are all websites with a large number of pages, articles, images and videos and obviously they have huge traffic demands; thousands of visitors per day. WordPress is not only able to satisfy these demands and handle with ease such websites but does this in a usable and elegant way. A set of the most important features of WordPress are listed below.
Dashboard
Dashboard is the first thing a an author views when logging in to WordPress. It give users a glance to the main elements of their website such as the number of posts and pages, the categories as well as their current status. Its user friendly interface allows the user to easily find navigate away from the dashboard to other elements of the system. |
Add content in seconds
Pages and posts consist the main segment of a website and can include text, links, images, videos or any other kind of web media. Web media can be put into categories, imported, exported, added, deleted, and edited. WordPress pages can be used to create one or more navigation menus and they can be easily managed through the administration panel. |
Rich text editor
The usage of WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors in WordPress ensures that any user with no technical background will be able to update any website. It’s as easy as sending an email or editing a document in Microsoft Word. In fact, WordPress can be integrated with Microsoft Word (see XML-RPC section for more information). |
Multilingual content
WordPress supports multilingual content for websites. Posts and pages can be configured to have different language translations which can be easily handled through the sidebar of the system. Once posts or pages are created the user must select the corresponding language translation. Translation pages and posts can be easily accessed and edited. |
Image editor
Media is the images, video, recordings, and files uploaded and used in a website. The Media Library allows the management of Media previously uploaded. Multiple Media objects can be selected for deletion. Search and filtering ability is also provided. The image editor is used to manage all aspects of an uploaded image to the website. |
Publication options
WordPress offers different ways of how pages appear in a website. Public pages will be visible by all website visitors once published. Password Protected pages are published to all, but visitors must know the password to view the page content. Private pages are visible only to the author (and to other editors or admins within the website). |
Search Engine Optimization
WordPress, straight out of the box, comes ready to embrace search engines. Its features and functions guide a search engine through posts , pages, and categories to help the search engine crawl any website and gather the required information to include it within its database. Furthermore, WordPress supports pinging Ping-O-Matic, which means maximum exposure to search engines. |
Widgets
Widgets give advanced flexibility to the content of a website. Widgets allow to have customized page elements for a more flexible outcome. WordPress Widgets is like a plugin, but designed to provide a simple way to arrange the various elements of your sidebar content without having to change any code. |
Users
WordPress Roles feature is designed to give the website owner the ability to control and assign what users can and cannot do in the website. A website owner can manage and allow access to such functions as writing and editing news, creating pages, defining links, creating categories, moderating comments and managing other users. |
